Biography: Dr. Kovacs is a board-certified retina specialist and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Kovacs specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, including conditions such as retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, trauma, endophthalmitis, vitreous hemorrhage, retinal degenerations and dystrophies, and secondary intraocular lenses.Dr. Kovacs has lived his whole life in the Northeast, growing up on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor line. A native of New Jersey, he graduated cum laude from Harvard College. He received his M.D. with distinction in clinical research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was also elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor society and a recipient of the Jesse S Weissberg Scholarship for Academic Excellence.Dr. Kovacs then completed his Internship Training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He completed Residency Training in Ophthalmology at Yale School of Medicine / Yale New Haven Hospital, followed by Fellowship Training in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College / New York – Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Kovacs was selected to serve as Chief Resident during the final year of his residency at Yale, and received multiple awards during his training including Yale ophthalmology resident research awards in 2017 and 2018, New York Academy of Medicine resident research award in 2017, and the Yale Department of Ophthalmology Marvin Sears Award recognizing clinical and surgical excellence.Dr. Kovacs is actively engaged in clinical and basic science research in retinal diseases and has published approximately 25 peer-reviewed research articles. He has authored several textbook chapters and has regularly presents his research at national and international meetings. Dr. Kovacs also serves as scientific reviewer to several major ophthalmology journals.Dr. Kovacs is also actively involved in resident and fellow education and serves as coordinator of retina education for ophthalmology residents at Weill Cornell.Dr. Kovacs is currently accepting new patients. Biography: Dr. Vandana Sood is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is dual board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.   Dr. Sood received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and earned a medical degree from New York Medical College. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and went on to complete fellowship training in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. She has experience caring for both recreational and professional athletes, and has been a team physician for high school, collegiate and professional sports teams. She has a particular interest in running related injuries and injuries affecting female athletes.   Dr. Sood’s clinical practice focuses on the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, spine disorders and acute sports injuries. Her goal is to work with patients to restore function, reduce pain, and prevent future injury. By providing personalized education and a comprehensive treatment plan including detailed physical therapy and/or an exercise plan, she promotes anactive and healthy lifestyle. She is skilled in image-guided injection techniques using both fluoroscopy and ultrasound to precisely target the spine, peripheral joints, or soft tissue (tendon, bursa, nerve, muscle). This includes specialized treatments such as hyaluronic acid or PRP injections, or nerve ablations to complement the treatment plan when appropriate.

Biography: Dr. Piracha completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Boston University and earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School. He completed his internship and anesthesiology residency training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, then went on to complete the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Tri-Institute Pain Fellowship.

Biography: Dr. Mulhern received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University. She then went on to study animal behavior and ecology at the University of California at Berkeley where she completed a Masters degree. She returned to the east coast to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where she received her MD degree. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, in 1998, and has been working as a general internist in Manhattan since completion of her training.

Biography: Dr. Kara Greenwald received her undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester and her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She was a member of the Rochester Early Medical Scholars Program. After medical school, she moved from Rochester, NY to New York City and completed her internal medicine residency training in 2011 at the New York University School of Medicine (NYUSOM). Before joining Weill Cornell Medicine Primary Care in 2017, Dr. Greenwald worked at Bellevue Hospital Center as a primary care physician, hospitalist, and assistant professor of general internal medicine at NYUSOM. Dr. Greenwald is also passionate about the topics of patient safety and quality improvement in medicine.  

Care Philosophy: My approach to patient care is to listen to the patient intently and to commit my full attention to the patient's concerns. Very often the diagnosis becomes clear just from patient input and information. My main areas of interests include hepatitis and biliary problems. Inflammatory bowl disease is growing concern in Brooklyn, and HIV afflictions in our community and its impact on the bowel is a challenge to our speciality.

Care Philosophy: For the past three decades I have been in fight against lung disease. My colleagues and I in the Lower Manhattan Hospital have been witness to the devastasting effects that lung diseases have caused in this community. Cigarette smoking, allergies, air pollution, resistant chest infections and the toxic residue of the World Trade Center collapse are just some of the factors that have motivated me to carry on the battle against lung disease. I feel privileged to have been a part of the lives of the many patients who have sought my counsel and care. I am especially delighted that the New York Presbyterian Hospital has made the commitment to bring their considerable resources and talents to lower Manhattan. It is truly exciting to be part of a formidable team of health care professionals.

Care Philosophy: Before joining the staff of Weill Cornell Medical Associates, Dr. Smerd worked as a primary care doctor at the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Hospital and at Odyssey House, a therapeutic drug community in Spanish Harlem. She was named chief resident after completing her medical residency at New York University. Dr. Smerd studied medicine at the Sackler School of Medicine/NY State program in Tel Aviv, Israel. She has also lived in Kathmandu and traveled the countryside of Nepal researching Vitamin A deficiency. She earned her bachelor's degree from Vassar College, where she graduated with a major in Women's studies focusing on Anthropology. Though originally from Pittsburgh, Dr. Smerd now lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.
